My Miracle App

If you are like me I struggle to find quality blocks of  personal time. You know to do stuff that you want to do. I have always thought if I just get up early I could free up a perfect block of undistracted time to get things done.  However, you know the human behavior saying that applies to investor psychology : “We have met the enemy, and he is us.” Well I know my biggest weakness is staying up late consequently I struggle to get up early. You know the feeling when the alarm goes off and you just bypass the sleep mode and go straight for the off button.

Well a few days ago I discovered the most amazing phone app and I just have to share it with you. I’m a bit of a phone app junkie always looking for something to improve productivity or make things easier. Well I just hit the mother load of app productivity. It’s called Sleep Cycle (iOS and Android yes!).

The Sleep Cycle app uses your phones built-in accelerometer to track your movement while lying in bed. It analyzes your sleep and wakes you in your lightest sleep phase. I was a bit skeptical that this would work but for only $0.99 cents it was worth a try.

The first night I tried it I went to bed early at 10:00 PM (early for me) and set the 30 minute wake up range from 5:00-5:30 AM. It took me awhile longer to fall asleep at the earlier hour, but finally dozed off around 10:30. At 5:11 AM I heard soft classical music. The volume was slowly increasing. But what was truly amazing was it was so easy to get up. It worked! I was barely asleep when the alarm went off and I felt great, not tired or groggy but refreshed.

To me it felt like a miracle – my miracle app! Now I have more time so I can exercise, read, write and oh yes check my investments! I’m so excited that this worked that I have now committed to make my #1 goal to get to bed at 10 PM so I can continue to get up early. Oh and after five days of data the app can give you quality of sleep reports! Now I can measure my sleep quality and improve it!

I know I’m such a Geek!

    Update – I’ve used Sleep Cycle for 10 days in a row now and my best sleep quality rating has been 77%. I think if I get another 30 minutes of sleep I can break into the 80’s. I’m averaging around 7 hours of in bed time and that’s just not cutting it.
